Note: Edited to add response to organic nutritional value study.
I’m distressed to see I somehow managed to miss the Salsalicious event last weekend at the Farmers Market here in Lawrence. I guess I arrived too late. :( The good news is that I’ll be around for the tomato tasting on August 8. Can’t wait!
Don’t forget to plan for the Food for Change Challenge next week. In the meantime, take a look at this roundup of news:
KC Star endorses NBAF in Kansas. Although a new General Accounting Office report (noted in Washington Post) questions the selection of Manhattan, Kansas, as the location for a new National Bio and Agro-defense Facility (where do they come up with these names?), the Star observes that anywhere the facility is placed is going to resolve safety issues. (KC Star)
Whither Foodperson? The Star’s report on KC area food blogs somehow missed Foodperson.com. I’ll prefer to think it’s because the Star doesn’t think that Lawrence is in the Kansas City area. Works for me! (KC Star) On the other hand, don’t let me stop you from informing the Star of Foodperson’s existence. :)
No organic advantage? Maybe you read about a study finding no nutritional benefit from organic vs. nonorganic foods. (Here’s the press release at EurekAlert, which was picked up by some news services.) As Stephanie Ogburn, a fellow Ethicurean, pointed out privately, there are really not enough studies that have been done to draw any conclusions about the nutritional advantages or not of organic. We do know, though, that organic methods are significantly better for the environment, and if that’s not an advantage, I don’t know what one is! UPDATE: The Organic Center has a much stronger response to the study, and it is not in agreement! (The Organic Center)
Putting food by. Here’s a nice summary of foods you can preserve by various methods. (Rappahanock Cook)
Crop swap. I love this concept so much I’m thinking I may have mentioned this before. Still, if you’re a gardener, here’s a way to share—and trade—the bounty! (TreeHugger)

Yep, I noticed your blog was missing from the Star’s list…and it seemed to be heavy on more of a restaurant focus. Given your connections to the Star, youda thunk they’d include yours!

You didn’t miss Salsalicious! It is THIS Saturday. There is a listing on the Kansas Farmers Markets site and it includes links to your flickr album from last year: http://www.ksfarmersmarkets.org/events

Thanks for noticing, Susan. Susan F. commented privately about it too. Just a sign I need to promote this blog more, I suppose.
And thanks for letting me know, Mercedes. Can’t wait! Meanwhile, love the events page on the Kansas Farmers Market site. Good job!

I really enjoy your blog and thank you for all your hard work and tips. I’ve begun blogging about local food sources in and around Miami County, KS area, including recipes for in-season produce.
