Roundup: Talking, planting, harvesting

In honor of our cattle-country heritage, and to make Bonnie happy at Ethicurean.com, I’m going to start calling these item entries roundups rather than digests. (We’re going to ignore the broad-spectrum herbicide implications for now.) Yee-haw!

Localizing Lawrence food. The Lawrence Sustainability Network is sponsoring a panel discussion at 6 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at the ECM building, 1204 Oread Ave., titled “Go Local: A Community Response to Everyday Food Choices” featuring local farmers, grocers, gardeners and a restaurateur. (Info via LSN’s email notices; I couldn’t find it on the Web site.)

Plant an extra row. Harvesters food pantry in Kansas City is participating in a program called Plant a Row for the Hungry, which encourages home gardeners to share their bounty. Debra Skodak has a few extra details in the KC Star.

Wheat state rivalry. Last year’s rotten weather in Kansas allowed rival North Dakota to take top wheat-production honors in 2007.

Bean recall. A regional recall of four-bean salad starts in North Kansas City.
