Top five summer dishes

July 25th, 2007 · 4 Comments · Food selection

It must be the time for favorite summer dish lists. Last night, Leni said her son laughed when she said she and Neil were preparing Nicoise salad. He identified it as one of their four standard summer dishes—a list he had noted that his parents, the cooks had not. Then, as I was listening to NPR tonight, the announcer rattled off a list of favorite summer dishes that listeners had called in.

I figured, why not make up my summer list, too? So here are my top five in no particular order, or at least the top five that jump to mind. Can’t say I’ve ever kept tabs. Then again, my favorite just might be the perfectly ripe whatever it is I just ate. Bliss!

Tomatoes

  1. Cantaloupe, straight up, or with plain yogurt
  2. Sliced tomatoes, straight up, or with a sprinkling of salt, or cottage cheese, or slivers of basil
  3. Ratatouille
  4. Pasta with uncooked tomato sauce
  5. Smoked whole chicken (cooked on covered grill with indirect heat) and sweet corn
  6. Nicoise salad

OK, so that’s six. What’s your top five? I’d love to hear!

You’re easy to please; I like that. And you can have those any season, just vary the fruit.

  • Peter

    -gazpacho
-spring salad (recipe forthcoming at Ethicurean)
    -grilled sausages
-grilled zucchini and eggplant slices (brushed only with olive oil)
    -grilled pork chops
    -cold borscht

Ah, yes, Peter. Gazpacho. I love it, though it seems as though I rarely make it myself tending, instead, to enjoy my friends’ combos. I’ll look forward to your spring salad recipe-even if it is summer!
