Here’s Kansas in the middle of the United States.
We are ever so lucky here in Lawrence (see red dot below in Kansas) as far as our access to fresh, local food.
Not only does the Lawrence Farmers Market have a Saturday morning market, as is common in towns and cities across the country, but it also has markets on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. I suppose it could be a little confusing, since the four markets occur at three locations, but I suspect most people are creatures of habit and attend the same one(s) regularly.
Meanwhile, Local Burger offers a wide selection of burgers and hot dogs made from locally raised beef, buffalo, elk and pork. What’s more, they also offer a market on Wednesdays (I think it’s still going!) where their suppliers can sell directly to consumers.
And as if that weren’t enough, the Rolling Prairie Farmer’s Alliance rolls out its first installment of 2007 produce on Monday. I can hardly wait. I’ve been a subscriber since its first year (1994), and I look forward to its arrival each spring. Word on the street is that they’ve had to create a waiting list since the hard April freeze zapped some of the early crops. I’m ready for whatever they have to offer.
