Food provides a vehicle through which we can travel back in time. Thoughts of memorable tastes, such as my first fresh-squeezed orange juice, take us to the place we tasted them. But the unexpected bite of certain flavors takes us back, too. Black walnuts transport me to my grandmother’s kitchen. Will today’s children have memories of distinctive food, or just one long run of the salty, sweet, processed kind?

Summer fruit salad keeps you and kitchen cool

A summer fruit salad of sweet cherries, green grapes and cantaloupe tossed with mint sugar (sugar blended with fresh mint leaves) keeps the kitchen cool and adds an extra dose of coolness thanks to refreshing mint.

The congressional subcommittee that declined to reform farm subsidies has failed U.S. taxpayers and consumers by maintaining wrongheaded approach to agriculture. The regional news media hasn’t helped, either, in failing to keep readers up to date on this big, unsexy issue.
