Weird public food policies

Did you see the one about making jail inmates’ diet healthier? How about the one where school lunch programs are the main recipients of meat from “downer” cattle that is being recalled? (Not that the recall is in any way meaningful.) And that’s not all that’s wrong with the school lunch program. Wouldn’t you think that kids might benefit from some of the same healthy food considerations as the inmates?

    Wow. I guess maybe prisoners can sue, but kids can’t. Sad commentary indeed.

    Yes, but please do also keep in mind that inmates have no guardians but the state, whereas kids get at least some meals served by other adult decisionmakers.

    So I can see making sure that people who are completely at the mercy of the state get some somewhat improved treatment before moving on to doing the same for people who are only partly at the mercy of the state.
