The Kansas City Food Circle, an organization that puts food buyers and producers together, is good to know about if you’re wanting contact with local producers in the off-season. Dave Lawrence, the circle’s “web minion,” recently advised me that the KC Food Circle features “only local growers who pledge to use certifiable organic and humane methods to produce food (in brief - no fossil-fuel pesticides or fertilizers, no prophylactic antibiotics, no animal by-products in animal feed).”
If you’re interested, check out their web site. Also note that, unlike here in Lawrence, the KC Food Circle does promote some winter markets. Dave said to expect meats, grains, squash, prepared foods and other items that store well. He suggests that you phone ahead to make sure that what you are looking for will be available.
Lawrence residents can get local meat direct from producers on Tuesdays at Local Burger.
In addition, the food circle is signing up people for next year’s CSA programs. So if you’re in the Kansas City area and have wanted to try a CSA, you can find options for organic, natural and free range food produced by local growers on the KC Food Circle’s CSA page.
