KC Market gets cookbook treatment

October 21st, 2007 · 2 Comments · local food, recipes

The City Market in Kansas City, Mo., the area’s oldest (to my knowledge) ongoing farmers market, marked 150 years this year, and a local cookbook honors the occasion and the goods sold at the market.

In Season coverJulienne Gehrer—an avid cook, Hallmark Cards editor and entrepreneur—has written In Season: Cooking Fresh from the Kansas City Farmers’ Market, recently released. The book is a colorful compilation of recipes, organized by season (more or less), and interspersed with profiles from some of the market’s vendors. The recipes include dishes from appetizers to desserts, and many of them have a Greek accent, reflecting the author’s heritage.

I was disappointed not to find more than a brief discussion of the market’s history, but that’s a quibble. I’m looking forward to trying many of the recipes from In Season. The book is currently available online from Ash Grove Press. Meanwhile, food lovers and prospective cookbook writers might be interested in Gehrer’s presentation at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 28, at the Writers Place in Kansas City, at 3607 Pennsylvania St. She will talk about her book from idea to publication. As best I understand, the event is open to the public.

This is great. Should be a good Christmas gift. I called the Raven to see if they could order one.

They probably can’t; she doesn’t have a distributor yet. I should have said they’re also available through Rainy Day Books in Fairway and at the City Market offices weekdays, the City Market booth on Saturdays.
