Bonnie, in a cranky but funny post over at Ethicurean.com, introduced me to a new concept, LOHAS, meaning lifestyles of health and sustainability. LOHAS is used as an adjective in front of consumer, and there’s a whole website dedicated to them (us?) at www.lohas.com.
I skimmed the site with distinct ambivalence. It’s a wonderful thing for the larger world of business to recognize that many people want a lifestyle and products that don’t require draining oil reserves, depleting soils and abusing other natural resources.
But one session title from this year’s LOHAS Forum (aka convention) in May caught my attention. The title: “Big Businesses Go Green Without Sacrificing Greed.” I didn’t get the impression that the presenter was trying to be cheeky with that title, which is a little disturbing.
That title was a good reminder to people who really want a sustainable lifestyle that buying more stuff, even if it’s “green stuff,” runs counter to creating a sustainable lifestyle.
If you’re wondering what these LOHAS businesses are all about, the page promoting next year’s forum gives the rundown, but you might take a look at this year’s agenda to see how those ideas are applied.
