Tip: Fruit + half & half = dessert

July 16th, 2007 · 2 Comments · Cooking tips, Food preparation, recipes

This has happened to me: Friends are coming for dinner, and I realize I didn’t make a dessert. Not a problem with this simple formula:

Fruit + half & half = dessert

Too easy? OK. Sprinkle a little sugar & some toasted pecans on top. Even better.

One of the great things about this combination is that few people these days seem to keep half & half or cream in the fridge. (Too bad for them and their coffee.) As a result, your guests will think you’re serving them something extravagant—decadent, even—despite a quarter-cup of half & half being a mere 80 calories and a lot cheaper than ice cream (typically about 145 calories for a half cup of vanilla).

What kind of fruit? Whatever you’ve got that’s good and fresh. I recommend berries, cherries, peaches, nectarines. De-lish.

I always have half and half on hand (for the cup of coffee) and this is a great idea! You could even drizzle a little Amaretto, Gran Marnier, or Kaluha in the cream. Yum.

Ooo! Good idea. That’s what I love about basic combinations like this one; you can make almost infinite variations to suit your taste and available ingredients. Thanks for that suggestion.
