Scientific research is a fine thing, but when it comes to diet, research mostly confirms what we know in our hearts and bodies-literally. We feel better and are healthier when we eat a variety of foods just like nature made.

Official and unofficial rules exist for how long one can keep leftovers, as in leftover food. They range from one week or stinky, slimy, moldy (whichever comes first) to 3-4 days (official for most foods) to 1-2 days for the conservative folk.
