This is cool. My neighbor, whose dog daily tries to devour my dog, will be featured tomorrow night (May 15, 2007) on the Sundance Channel’s “Big Ideas for a Small Planet: Eat.” The neighbor, Hilary Brown, owns and operates Local Burger, which dispenses, as the name suggests (and as mentioned in this post) locally produced burgers-as in beef, buffalo, elk and other kinds of burgers, all grown within a cow chip’s throw of downtown Lawrence, Kansas. (With a population in the neighborhood of 90,000, we’re probably bigger than out-of-towners suspect.)
The short version of the Local Burger story in today’s Lawrence newspaper (which wins tons of good will for keeping its electronic archives freely available), is that a 2006 Lawrence arrival, Simran Sethi, known for her work with TreeHugger.com and MTV (they don’t need a link), proposed that Sundance do a feature on Brown and LocalBurger, and it happened. The show had a premier tonight at the local independent theater, which I couldn’t make.
You and the world can see it tomorrow (Tuesday, May 15) on the Sundance Channel. The Sundance Channel schedule is available online. See when it’s running in your time zone. (Note to Sundance: Your website’s too cool for it’s own good. Quicker, easier navigation is more likely to bring people back.) Look for the listing for “Big Ideas for a Small Planet.”

I went to the event at Liberty Hall last night and sat in delighted amazement as people packed into the theatre to support Hilary and LocalBurger, on a Monday night nonetheless! Her vision is simple, brilliant and her enthusiasm is infectious. The sneak preview we saw of the segment on Sundance is fantastic, don’t miss it!
