Tip: Grating citrus rind

April 15th, 2007 · No Comments · Cooking tips, Tools

Instead of rubbing the orange or lemon against the grater, lay the fruit on a cutting board and move the grater against the fruit as you hold it steady with one hand. You’re probably quicker than I am, but it took me decades in the kitchen to figure this one out. If you’re doing it the other way around as I used to do-holding the grater firmly against the counter or cutting board and moving the fruit across it-you will not believe how much better the alternative works.

Of course, if someone would thoughtfully buy me one of those fabulous Microplane graters, it might not matter how I held the lemon. Oh! And I see the price has dropped markedly from a few years ago, so I just may get one for myself one of these days.
