If you’ve been paying attention, you know that “eat local” is a very current catchphrase. Eating locally produced foods yields an array of benefits to the eaters as well as to the environment and community. Eggs are a great way to start your own eat-local habits, and what better time than Easter?
Kansas City-area eaters can find egg producers (the people, not the chickens) through the Kansas City Food Circle’s 2007 guide to local producers. Some of them even sell colored Easter eggs that no one had to dye (just in case you’re in a pre-Easter crunch). The Food Circle’s directory provides a nice starting place for people living in eastern Kansas and western Missouri, listing dozens of growers in the area, contact information, and what they produce.
Here are sample entries of farmers whose produce includes eggs:

I’m not necessarily recommending either of these producers-don’t know that I’ve used them-but you can see the kind of information the directory has available. I list these two for their eggs, but other listings offer fruits, vegetables and meats. Area farmers markets, which seem to increase in number every year, also are listed.
Take your Easter egg hunt to your favorite supermarket. You might find that eggs produced locally are easier to get than you think.
